About 3 years ago, our daughter was 4 years old and our son was very involved in motorcycle racing. As a result, she was very familiar with the sound engines made as the bikes accelerated.
One day, as we were walking around the neighborhood, we encountered a hill. The hill was steep enough that in the past it had beaten her. This time however, we heard her making motorcycle engine noises as she peddled up her enemy. The closer she got to the top, the louder she got.
She was super proud when she got to the top and proclaimed; “see daddy, I did it”.
At that point in her young life, I imagine she had associated the noises the engines made to the acceleration the bikes produced.
This reminds me of the simple view of the world many people hold. The idea that all it takes for world security is for a few executive orders to be passed is as simple of a view as that loud engine-like noises result in acceleration.
