Turning your IKEA OMAR stand into a much more expensive GRUNDTAL cart is easier than you think.
All you need a couple of simple items:
- The OMAR shelf: $18.99
- Four wheels: $15.52 (3.88 x 4)
- 15 feet of stainless steel wire rope: $4.20
- A pack of Aluminum ferrules: $2.80
- 3 sheets of corrugated plastic of 12in x 16.5 in: $5.96
- Some zip ties: $11.97
For a total of: $60
To complete the project it is pretty obvious. You replace the legs for the wheels. You use the corrugated plastic and the ties as the base for each shelf. To perforate the plastic just use a small drill bit and your hand. The plastic is super easy to penetrate and you just need the pressure of your hand and the sharpness of the drill bit to get the job done.
The tricky part may be the stainless steel wire rope. For that I recommend you loop it around each leg. Insert one of the ferrule into both ends of the rope and pull. I recommend using a couple of vise grip pliers to do the pulling. The just crimp and you are done.
You’ll want to trim the excess wire AFTER you have crimped it. Otherwise pulling it together will be a headache.
